About the census data link

This map does not display population or household figures directly. Nepal's official 2021 census results (from the National Statistics Office, formerly CBS) don't offer a public API or bulk-downloadable dataset matched to these exact boundary codes, so rather than show numbers that might be outdated or mismatched, clicking a palika gives you a direct search link to find its official, current figures on censusnepal.cbs.gov.np.

About the Nepal Palika Map

Nepal restructured into a federal system in 2017, dividing the country into 7 provinces, 77 districts, and 753 local government units known as palikas — rural municipalities (Gaunpalika), municipalities (Nagarpalika), sub-metropolitan cities (Upamahanagarpalika), and metropolitan cities (Mahanagarpalika). This map shows every one of them, clickable, searchable, and filterable by province.

What's included, and what isn't

Each palika's boundary, name, district, province, and administrative type come from openly licensed boundary data. What isn't included is ward-level detail or embedded population figures — both were deliberately left out rather than published inaccurately. Reliable, complete ward-level boundary data for all roughly 6,700 wards nationally isn't available as clean open data the way palika-level boundaries are, and Nepal's official census results aren't available as a bulk dataset matched to these boundary codes. Rather than guess or scrape data from a site that explicitly disallows it, clicking a palika links you to search its real, current figures directly on the official census portal.

Who this is for

  • Researchers, students, and journalists needing a quick visual reference for which district and province a given palika belongs to
  • NGOs and development professionals planning work across specific local government areas
  • Anyone curious which palika a particular place name belongs to

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this show ward-level boundaries?

No — this map shows palika (local government) level boundaries only, which is the municipality/rural municipality level. Accurate, complete ward-level (sub-palika) boundary data for all roughly 6,700 wards nationally isn't reliably available as open data the way palika-level boundaries are, so rather than publish something potentially inaccurate, this map stops at the palika level.

Does clicking a palika show its population?

Not directly. Nepal's official 2021 census results don't offer a public API or bulk dataset matched to these boundary codes, so clicking a palika gives you a direct search link to find its official, current figures on the National Statistics Office's census portal instead of showing potentially outdated numbers here.

Where does the boundary data come from?

From LocalBoundaries, an open data project by Open Knowledge Nepal, licensed under CC BY 4.0. It's based on Nepal's post-2017 federal restructuring into 753 local government units across 77 districts and 7 provinces.

Can I download this boundary data myself?

Yes — LocalBoundaries offers the full dataset in GeoJSON, TopoJSON, Shapefile, KML, and GeoPackage formats, whole-country or split by province, at their site linked below the map.
